There is no single reliable price for every OpenCart store. The budget depends on what needs to be designed, built, connected, migrated and maintained. A useful quote makes those assumptions visible so you can compare the actual work.
Separate software cost from project cost
OpenCart's core software is available as an open-source download. That does not make the full store free to build or run. Your budget may include design, development, paid extensions, content preparation, hosting and ongoing maintenance.
A basic installation and a custom ecommerce project are different deliverables. Compare what each option includes rather than judging two headline prices as though the scope were identical.
Identify the main cost drivers
| Work area | What changes the scope |
|---|---|
| Design | Standard theme configuration or custom customer journeys. |
| Catalogue | Product data quality, variants, filtering and import work. |
| Integrations | Payment, shipping, supplier, ERP and marketplace requirements. |
| Migration | Existing data, URL preservation and validation. |
| Languages | Translation, localisation and content maintenance. |
| Launch | Testing, training, deployment and recovery planning. |
Complexity is not determined by product count alone. A small catalogue with customer-specific prices and a difficult supplier API can require more work than a larger, well-structured catalogue.
Allow for the costs after launch
List hosting, domain renewal, paid extension renewals, third-party subscriptions, payment-provider fees and maintenance separately. Some are fixed, while others depend on usage or orders. Confirm which services you buy directly and which are included in a support agreement.
Backups and security updates should have an owner. Ask how restore work, urgent incidents and future OpenCart or PHP upgrades are handled. Avoid assuming that a one-time development fee includes unlimited future changes.
Prepare a brief that makes estimates useful
- Your existing website and OpenCart version, if applicable.
- The catalogue size, variants and quality of available data.
- Selling countries, languages and customer groups.
- Required payment, delivery and external-system connections.
- Examples of the design or customer journey you need.
- Priorities, a target date and a realistic budget indication.
If some requirements are uncertain, identify them openly. A discovery or technical assessment can reduce uncertainty before a fixed implementation scope is agreed.
Compare the scope, not just the total
Check deliverables, acceptance criteria, revision rounds, licences, content work, testing and handover. Look for explicit assumptions and exclusions. Ask what happens when a third-party system requires work that was not visible at the start.
Can the project be delivered in stages?
Often, yes. Agree a complete first release and a separate list of later improvements. Dependencies such as an essential upgrade or data migration still need to be planned.
Can OCS give a price without a detailed specification?
We can discuss the likely scope and next steps from an initial brief. A meaningful implementation quote needs enough information about the required store and integrations.

Send your store URL, priorities and required integrations. We will use that information to discuss a clear scope, including the work and costs that need separate agreement.
